How much of a hallway should a runner cover?

I personally love runner rugs  because of their long, narrow size, which adds elegance to any space.  

They are the perfect addition to narrow areas in your home like your hallway.

If your runner covers most of your hallway, however, that would not be the best interior decor idea.

The general rule is to leave 4 to 5 inches of open space on each side of your hallway.

For extra large hallways, your solution is to get a larger runner rug. 

In this case, leaving 6 inches open on each side would work pretty well.

As you may know, you can use a runner rug in other areas of your home.
